Sea turtles play a vital role in the oceans' ecosystems, but improper fishing practices, poachers, and the millions of tons of trash in the water pose a serious threat to the species. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), almost all species of sea turtles are now classified as endangered. The non-profit organization aims to end illegal turtle harvesting and other such harmful activities.
The Facebook page The Earth recently shared a video (embedded below) of a diver who comes across a sea turtle entrapped in debris.
The turtle frantically tries to swim away, unaware that the diver is trying to help.
It goes without saying that if there were no sea turtles in the ocean there would be major ecological effects. Per the WWF, sea turtles "help maintain the health of sea grass beds and coral reefs that benefit commercially valuable species such as shrimp, lobster and tuna." Much like the bees are critical to the welfare of humans, sea turtles are instrumental to the ocean.
In the end of the video, the diver is able to free the turtle from captivity, who then swims away to continue its life journey.
