Diver has exhilarating experience sitting with a whale and her newborn

Some amazing footage made its way onto the National Geographic YouTube account: That of a diver approaching a 50-foot whale, then getting to meet its calf. This footage was taken in Península Valdés, Argentina, a habitat of great significance. UNESCO reports Península Valdés is on the World Heritage List as a home for the endangered southern right whales, as well as southern elephant seals and sea lions. Justin Hofman, the diver in the video below, explains he was given permission to dive and film these rare, gargantuan animals.
Southern right whales can weigh up to 60 tons and are distinguishable from other whales by their callosities, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains. The term "callosities" refers to the large, often white protuberances on their bodies, which are actually nothing more than roughened skin despite their worrisome appearance.

The NOAA reveals southern right whales are the rarest large whale species in existence, which makes this encounter that much more incredible. Having a run-in with a whale is one thing, but meeting what is practically a legend is another. Especially when said legend welcomes your presence and allows you to approach its calf. "Your heart is in your throat, to say the least," Hofman said of the experience.
